Our Story
For over a decade, African-American women at Davidson College petitioned the college to bring a historically black sorority to the campus. Prior to November 2008, the campus's Greek system included six intercollegiate fraternity council organizations and four all women's eating houses. Many women of color felt that the campus lacked sufficient opportunities to build sisterhood, pursue scholastic achievement, and serve the community. In 2006, several such women encouraged the college to invite one of the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) sororities to charter a chapter at Davidson. Consequently, President Emeritus Bobby Vagt invited a number of NPHC sororities to campus to present their missions, histories, and national programs to the student body.
Ultimately, a campus committee selected Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. to charter a chapter at Davidson. However, there remained several young women who knew they deserved access to the exceptional standard of sisterhood, scholarship, and service that only one sorority could bring. These dedicated young women petitioned the National President of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., to meet regularly with college officials and solicited the support of local alumnae chapters to turn their eyes towards Davidson.
In 2010, Davidson College created the National Pan-Hellenic Council Expansion Committee which was composed of several students, staff, and faculty, At this point, there was no doubt which sorority would grace Davidson’s campus. Upon reviewing the Committee’s decision, President Tom Ross approved the recommendation to establish a chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. at Davidson College.
On March 27th, 2011, the Upsilon Mu Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated was chartered by fifteen exceptional women, the start of an inspirational legacy.
